'Rosetta phones' to translate foreign text

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded Next Wave Systems, LLC of Pekin, IN and Purdue University a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract to design a "Rosetta phone," an application to run on commercially-available camera phones and portable computing devices to capture and translate foreign language text.

DARPA envisions such a tool used by soldiers in the field to decipher street signs, captured documents, or other materials, across a range of languages such as Arabic, Cyrillic, Kanji, Hebrew, Greek, Korean han'gul or Chinese.
